Luemba, Age 16, DR Congo
Sweet Leumba lives deep in the heart of the Democratic
Republic of the Congo in the small settlement of Kivuvu. Just
three years ago, she developed leprosy. Tragically, Luemba
didn’t know she had leprosy until she spilled boiling water on
her hands while cooking. She never even felt the pain.
Why? Leprosy had already killed the nerves in her hands and
feet, stripping them of all sensation. What’s worse, her hand
had begun to “claw,” and people in her village began to insult
her, calling her hurtful names like “monkey hand.” She was
ashamed and tells us,
“My hands and feet are not normal. This is what makes me
sad.”
Thankfully, ALM health workers found Leumba, and her
leprosy has now been cured. Even though she suffers from
permanent nerve damage, she’s no longer hopeless. Faithful
ALM supporters like you help us sustain life-changing
programs and services that help to heal and restore lives.
Leumba is working with a wonderful doctor who is helping her
to get healthy again and is learning how to properly care for her
damaged hands and feet.
Please pray for Leumba and other kids like her. We
must reach them with the cure for leprosy before it does
permanent damage to their young bodies. Thank you.
